Celebrating Fashion Revolution Week with a Fashion Revolution Manifesto
Between 22nd and 29th April 2023, we celebrate Fashion Revolution Week – a week-long celebration of fashion, dialogue, discussions, workshops and protests aimed at raising awareness about why the fashion industry needs to change. It’s been ten year since the disastrous Rana Plaza accident. On 24th April 2013, the Bangladesh garment factory collapsed, killing more than 1,100 people and injuring 2,500, making it one of the largest industrial disasters in modern history. Since then, the team behind Fashion Revolution has been working tirelessly to bring about the much-needed changes.
The Fashion Revolution Manifesto they came up with tackles the biggest problems in the entire fashion industry – but implementing their proposals comes down to every single one of us. For this reason, The Fashion Revolution Manifesto is this year’s theme, bringing the focus back to where it all started.
#1 Fashion provides dignified workfrom conception to creation to catwalk. It does not enslave, endanger, exploit, overwork, harass, abuse or discriminate against anyone. Fashion liberates worker and wearer and empowers everyone to stand up for their rights.
#3 Fashion gives people a voice, making it possible to speak up without fear, join together in unity without repression and negotiate for better conditions at work and across communities.
#5 Fashion stands for solidarity, inclusiveness and democracy, regardless of race, class, gender, age, shape or ability. It champions diversity as crucial for success.
#6 Fashion conserves and restores the environment. It does not deplete precious resources, degrade our soil, pollute our air and water or harm our health. Fashion protects the welfare of all living things and safeguards our diverse ecosystems.
Reading through the manifesto, we see work needs to be done. As a global industry employing hundreds of thousands of workers, the majority of which are female, fashion has an immense impact on societies worldwide – and we believe it can be used as a driving force for implementation of sustainable and ethical practices.
As a sustainable brand, we do everything in our power to make the Fashion Revolution Manifesto an immediate reality. For this reason, we only produce our clothing with sustainable and certified organic fabrics, a locally-based production and a transparent supply chain. When you ask #whomademyclothes, we can tell you it was Saša, Dušan, Marlena, Nina, Mateja, Darja, Mija and their colleagues, who do their job in optimal working conditions where no exploitations or violations of any kind are present and are paid a fair living wage for their work.
Supporting sustainable brands who offer an alternative to fast fashion is key to transforming the fashion system. Taking the time and shopping mindfully saves resources and eliminates hasty investments. Only buying what you need, wearing what you have for as long as possible, mending and upcycling damaged pieces, thrifting and exchanging are all revolutionary acts in a fast fashion system.
Thank you for creating a fairer fashion system with us.
